Working with copper has been a tradition in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacan since pre-Hispanic times. A few of the workshops in Santa Clara have modernized but Antonio Ziranda is keeping the old tradition alive, as do all the craftsmen that I work with. Michoacan is an agricultural state filled with pine forests, croplands, and fruit orchards. This indigenous design was inspired by the segments you see in oranges and grapefruits, many of which are grown in the nearby Tierra Caliente (hot land), not far from Antonio's village.

We first saw this bowl in the dining room at the famous Greene and Green Gamble Home Museum in Pasadena, California in the mid-1990's. We liked it so much we decided to make it in copper and it's been a hit ever since. This bowl is water-tight and perfect for floating your favorite flowers - a cheerful accent for your home. After moving to the Southwest in 1918, Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) purchased a Chevrolet car in 1920 that allowed him to explore the Southwest and eventualy the Pacific Coast. Baumann loved the Sequoia National Forest and the redwoods near San Francisco which inspired this print "Singing Trees".
