It's not unusual to find whimsical interpretations in copper at the holiday fairs and contests in Michocan, where the artisans live. Mastersmith Antonio Ziranda has transformed 10# of raw copper into this elegant and slightly surreal squash. I have a similar squash at home and never tire of it. We have just ONE!

Grueby Faience Company was founded in 1894 by William Grueby who was inspired by French pottery matte glazes, particularly the cucumber green that became the company's hallmark, and the refined simplicity of Japanese ceramics. In its heyday Grueby was sold through Tiffany Studios in New York City and Gustav Stickley incorporated Grueby tiles in his furniture. This beauty measures 12" high and has a subtle, abstracted leaf and pod design in repousse. BACK IN STOCK!.

The "diamonte" (diamond) motif has been a favorite design for generations of coppersmiths in Santa Clara del Cobre. Historically the diamond has been a symbol of strength and invulnerability. Master Coppersmith Antonio Ziranda has created a diamond pattern on this vase using respousse', a technique dating to ancient Mesopotamia. Antonio begins from inside the vase, using hammers and other handmade tools to "push" the diamond design out.

Antonio created this striking vase for Cobre's 30th anniversary. The fish motif is inspired by "Pescado Blanco" (white fish), a Michoacan delicacy. Lake Patzcuaro is near Antonio's village and home to Pescado Blanco. The flora and fauna of the lake have been a source of inspiration for centuries to potters, weavers, woodcarvers and of course, coppersmiths! Antonio's rendition is substantial and bold - copperwork at its best. Just ONE left!

I love fall squash, so much so that years ago I brought three favorites from my garden to my coppersmiths in Mexico to use as models. This summer I asked Antonio Ziranda to replicate them for the holidays and he has done a beautiful job - they're sculptural and whimsical - a single squash or a grouping makes a delightful statement!
