Albert Berry (1880-1949) immigrated from England at a young age and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. After years of work in design he moved to Alaska and worked as a miner. The natural beauty of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest fascinated him. His work was heavily influenced by Alaskan and Northwest motifs which made his Arts and Crafts copperwork unique. The Roycroft Metal Shop in East Aurora NY was in full production by 1910 and was the inspiration of Elbert Hubbard, a visionary inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement in England that was thriving at the time. His upbeat marketing combined with the beauty and design of the handcrafted objects that were produced in the shop made them extremely popular.

When I visited Santa Clara del Cobre October 2019 I saw this vase in Antonio Ziranda's workshop. My visit was timed with one of the most important festivals in Mexico, El Dia de los Muertos. Part of the festivities includes a much-anticipated contest where artisans submit their best work to be judged with hopes of winning prizes. You will see the best ceramics, wood carving, weaving, embroidery, masks, and of course, copper! Antonio Ziranda participates every year and I visited his workshop just before he submitted his pieces to be juried. When I saw this vase, I had to have it. Apparently, the judges felt the same way as it received a blue ribbon! Just TWO left!

Nearly 30 years ago the manager of the gift shop for the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studo asked us to make this vase, modeled after a 1909 Russian vase that was part of his personal collection. With nothing more than a photo Antonio Ziranda beautifully crafted a sample. It was an immediate hit and one of our best selling vases. I archived this vase for a few years and recently asked Antonio to make a small batch, they arrived and are ready for their new homes!

Grueby Faience Company was founded in 1894 by William Grueby who was inspired by French pottery matte glazes, particularly the cucumber green that became the company's hallmark, and the refined simplicity of Japanese ceramics. In its heyday Grueby was sold through Tiffany Studios in New York City and Gustav Stickley incorporated Grueby tiles in his furniture. This beauty measures 12" high and has a subtle, abstracted leaf and pod design in repousse.
