Grueby Faience Company was founded in 1894 by William Grueby who was inspired by French pottery matte glazes, particularly the cucumber green that became the company's hallmark, and the refined simplicity of Japanese ceramics. We first saw this bowl in the dining room at the famous Greene and Green Gamble Home Museum in Pasadena, California in the mid-1990's.
