I love this vase and we have just ONE left! Working with copper has been a tradition in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacan since pre-Hispanic times. A few of the workshops in Santa Clara have modernized but Antonio Ziranda is keeping the old tradition alive, as do all the craftsmen that I work with. Michoacan is an agricultural state filled with pine forests, croplands, and fruit orchards. This indigenous design was inspired by the segments you see in oranges and grapefruits, many of which are grown in the nearby Tierra Caliente (hot land), not far from Antonio's village.

Antonio created this striking vase for Cobre's 30th anniversary. The fish motif is inspired by "Pescado Blanco" (white fish), a Michoacan delicacy. Lake Patzcuaro is near Antonio's village and home to Pescado Blanco. The flora and fauna of the lake have been a source of inspiration for centuries to potters, weavers, woodcarvers and of course, coppersmiths! Antonio's rendition is substantial and bold - copperwork at its best. Just ONE left!

The creator of this design was an amazing woman of her time, Marie Zimmerman (1879-1972). She was active in a “man’s world” creating metal sculptures and objects with a distinctive organic style. She came from a wealthy family, didn’t need to work and had no desire to marry – she was a true maverick. Antonio Ziranda created a beautiful interpretation of Zimmerman’s original vase. It's not unusual to find whimsical interpretations in copper at the holiday fairs and contests in Michocan, where the artisans live. Mastersmith Antonio Ziranda has transformed 10# of raw copper into this elegant and slightly surreal squash. I have a similar squash at home and never tire of it. We have just ONE!
