We made this hand hammered copper tray in 2014 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Cobre Copper. It was inspired by an Arts & Crafts tray we saw several years before and artist Anselmo Miranda did a beautiful rendition. Be sure to click the additional image detail to see the intricate blending of the step-beveled rim leading to the repousse flower border and hand cut handles - truly an heirloom piece.

This hand hammered copper plaque features the famous "seed pod" design which was originally created by the Gustav Stickley (1858-1942) workshop. Stickley was recognized as an originator of American Craftsman style design. Famous for his quarter-sawn oak furniture, Stickley was also known for his metalwork designs. Scotsman Robert Jarvie (1865-1941) was an active artist and designer during the early 20th century Arts and Crafts movement. He created this design between 1905-1912 in his Chicago Illinois workshop. After two centuries of isolationism, Japan opened its borders to the world in 1853. Within a few decades Japanese arts were well represented at the Chicago 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. The simplicity of design and connection to the natural world resonated with Frank Lloyd Wright, Greene and Greene and other 20th century Arts & Crafts designers. Among classic Japanese motifs are the wave and snowy plover seen here skimming the waves, beautifully executed in repoussé by Anselmo Miranda.
