I love fall squash, so much so that years ago I brought three favorites from my garden to my coppersmiths in Mexico to use as models. The British Arts and Crafts Movement incorporated this motif, notably by William Morris (1834-1896). Morris was heavily involved in the revival of traditional British textile arts as well as having a strong influence on the American Arts and Crafts Movement. Macomber was an active member of The Society of Arts and Crafts of Boston established in 1897 - America's oldest arts and crafts nonprofit organization still open to this day!

This tray was inspired by one of the stone mosaic inlays found at the famous Mixtec ruins of Mitla, 30 miles east of the capital city Oaxaca, in the state of Oaxaca. In 1996 I had the good fortune of a return visit to the state of Oaxaca. I visited the famous ruins of Monte Alban on a previous trip but I was eager to visit this famous archeological site. The small stone mosaic inlay for which Mitla is famous has aroused interest since colonial days and is unique in pre-Hispanic art and architecture. Tens of thousands of stones were cut and placed perfectly without the use of mortar to bind them together. The artisans astonishing skill has enabled the mosaics to weather the many earthquakes for which this region is famous. We have just 1 left!
