This lovely organic design is reminiscent of fern fronds which grow abundantly in the forests surrounding the village of Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacan where my artists and their families have lived for generations. After two centuries of isolationism, Japan opened its borders to the world in 1853. Within a few decades Japanese arts were well represented at the Chicago 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. The simplicity of design and connection to the natural world resonated with Frank Lloyd Wright, Greene and Greene and other 20th century Arts & Crafts designers. Among classic Japanese motifs are the wave and snowy plover seen here skimming the waves, beautifully executed in repoussé by Anselmo Miranda.
